Why Study Arabic in Aberdeen?

Learn Arabic for Work and Travel

Are you fluent in Arabic? If you are, there are many opportunities for you in the gastronomy and service area, as well as in the main economic activity of the city: the oil and energy industry. Since the discovery of North Sea Oil in 1969, the city has been known as the offshore oil capital of Europe. Important international corporations have headquarters and subsidiaries in Aberdeen dedicated to oil extraction and commercialisation. This means that there are endless possibilities for you to acquire a job in this field. As you might expect, those chances are certainly higher for polyglots. Plus, if you are interested in pursuing higher education, the University of Aberdeen, which has more than 35 years of experience providing language training, offers courses taught by native speakers to the general public in a friendly and professional manner. For instance, you can take a two-year course in Modern Standard Arabic, which will give you a grasp of some of the most common dialects of the Arabic language.

After completing your course, very big doors will open for you beyond Aberdeen. From Dubai, one of the most promising cities in the Middle East in terms of career progress, to the beautiful Qatar, one of the richest countries in the world, the possibilities are endless.

Learn Arabic for Social

Arabic has been a very important and relevant language since the 7th century, with a strong presence in fields like history, literature and science for more than 1000 years. arabic Songs

“حبيتك بالصيف” (I Loved You in the Summer)

“I Loved You in the Summer” is a romantic song by one of the most well-known Arab singers from Lebanon, Fayrouz. This song is great for beginners because it uses a lot of basic vocabulary, like the seasons (alsayf is summer, shata’ is winter, rbye is spring and alkharif is autumn). But the song is also useful for advanced levels who want to put their vocabulary to the test and challenge themselves to understand the gist of the song: unrequited love. The singer uses advanced words and expressions to describe her suffering, so keep the lyrics to hand! Click here to listen to this song.

“انت عمرى” (You Are My Life)

“You Are My Life” is, as you may have guessed, a romantic song by an Egyptian singer and songwriter, so it’s a great idea to listen to it to familiarise yourself with different Arabic accents. Some new terms you will hear include your eyes (euyunk), your light (nurik) and my heart (qalbi). In terms of grammar, the song is quite simple because it only includes verbs in the past and the imperative, like forgot (nasit) or gave (aetaa), so listening to the song is a great way to revise your course contents.
