Language lessons in Dublin

If you ever set foot in Dublin, you probably know its one of the most exciting multicultural cities in the world. Located in the province of Leinster on Irelands eastern coast, the city has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the ninth century, when it was founded by the Vikings.

Home to an estimated population of 554,554 people, Dublin is known for being one of the friendliest European capitals. It comes as no surprise, then, that many foreigners choose to move here. In fact, according to the 2016 census, 17% of Dubliners are foreign-born. Some of the biggest immigrant communities in the city come from Poland, Romania, Lithuania, Brazil, Italy and India.

Nowadays, as a result of these vast immigrant communities choosing to live in the city, at least 200 languages can be heard around Dublin. As you can imagine, for anyone living in such a multilingual city, speaking more than one language would be a great advantage. Whether you are looking to improve your social life, get a better job or simply expand your horizons, learning a language will enhance your experience in the city and create a deeper appreciation of the multicultural Irish society.

The city prides itself on having excellent universities and colleges like University College Dublin, which has an applied language centre where you can study 14 different languages at all levels. Some of these are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Swahili and Polish.

Language exchange groups in Dublin

As a language learner, you will want to test your new language skills. Fortunately, there are many communities of language enthusiasts in Dublin that offer a valuable chance to not only express yourself better but also to meet new friends with different cultural backgrounds.

One of the biggest language communities in the area is Language Exchange Ireland. They organise events in Dublin where you can practise and improve your target language with native speakers while at the same time you teach your native language to others. This language exchange, which takes place every Tuesday at The Well, located at 130 St Stephen's Green and every Wednesday at The Church at Jervis St, is set up like speed dating. First, you sit opposite a native speaker of your target language and speak English for five minutes. After that, you speak your target language for another five minutes and then, you move to the next table. This way, you get to chat with many people from all around the world, which is great if you want to listen to many different accents. This event is open to learners of all levels and ages and there’s no registration. You just have to show up, pay a €5 fee and get ready to chat!
