A major city in West Yorkshire, Leeds is located on the River Aire and has a population of around 450,000. The third largest city in the UK, Leeds was an agricultural market town during the Middle Ages, growing to a merchant town mainly involved in textiles by the Tudor period. Today Leeds is the largest financial centre outside London, with prevalent railway links to the rest of the country, and a quarter of the workforce are involved in financial and business services.
