Northampton
A large market town in central England, Northampton has a population in the region of 190,000, and is the UK's third largest town without official city status. Traditionally a centre for shoemaking, Northampton benefitted greatly economically from the railway age. The town is now known for its numerous parks, as well as its historical churches and abbeys. Much of its history was destroyed by fires in the 16th and 17th centuries, but this has instead led to it being rebuilt as a spacious and well-planned settlement.
