French Facts

Once the most universal language in the world, the influence of French diminished in the early 20th century to make way for English

From the 17th to 19th centuries, France was the leading power of Europe, and was the lingua franca (a language widely used beyond its native speakers) of educated Europe, especially when involving the arts, literature and diplomacy

It is the official language of 41 countries, most of which form the community of French-speaking nations the French call La Francophonie
