Seit es Menschen gibt, gibt es auch den Glauben an eine höhere Macht. Der Glaube an höhere Mächte, an einen Gott oder etwas Heiliges, das über allem anderen steht - und der Welt und dem Leben einen Sinn gibt, das ist vereinfacht gesagt, Religion. Heute gibt es auf der Welt fünf große Religionen, zu denen sich die meisten Menschen bekennen: das Judentum, das Christentum, der Islam, der Hinduismus und der Buddhismus.
Das Judentum ist die älteste Religion, die wir kennen. Die meisten Juden, die sich selbst das "Volk Israel" nennen, leben heute im Staat Israel oder in Nordamerika. Der wichtigste Grundsatz dieser Religion ist der Glaube an den Messias, einen Gesandten Gottes, der auf die Welt kommt, um Frieden zu stiften. Das Gotteshaus der Juden ist die Synagoge, zu ihren heiligsten Stätten gehört die Klagemauer in Jerusalem.
In der Welt des Spätjudentums entstand der christliche Glaube, der sich auf Jesus von Nazareth als den Erlöser (Christus) beruft. Gott wird Mensch durch Jesus und ist als Heiliger Geist in der Kirche zu finden. Vermittler zwischen Gott und Mensch sind die Priester und Pfarrer. Von den in der in der Bibel vorhandenen 10 Geboten, wird oft die Nächstenliebe hervorgehoben.
Der Islam ist eine von Mohammed in Mekka gestiftete Religion. Der Islam breitet sich sowohl in Afrika als auch in der westlichen Welt aus. Er ist geprägt von der absoluten Ergebung in den Willen Allahs, der der einzige Gott, Schöpfer aller Dinge und Herrscher über die Welt ist. Der Islam trägt teilweise auch politische Züge.
Der Hinduismus entstand im 1. Jahrtausend v. Chr. und ist eine historisch gewachsene Religion. Es existiert keine einheitliche Lehre, sondern eine Sammlung von religiösen und ethischen Anschauungen. Da der Hinduismus keine kirchenähnlichen Organisationsstrukturen kennt, ist religiöse Praxis vielfältig.
Im Zentrum der buddhistischen Lehre steht das Karma, das das Leben in den verschiedene Reinkarnationen beeinflußt. Eng damit verbunden ist die Meditation, denn nur durch sie kann der Mensch das Nirvana erreichen. Das Nirvana stellt einen Zustand dar, in dem der Mensch vollkommen losgelöst von der irdischen Welt ist.

While all beginner level students will cover survival German - needed for short visits to countries where English isn't widely spoken, or if you wish to 'go local'; those studying German usually go in different directions at this point, depending on what they need. Listen & Learn do not generally recommend classes of more than 6-8 people, although Taster courses in German can run with up to 12 people. Bookings must be made for all participants at the same time.

Portsmouth
A city on the southern coast of the UK, Portsmouth has a population of around 190,000. Home to the world's oldest drydock, the city has been a significant naval port for centuries, and remains to this day a major base for the Royal Navy. Portsmouth nowadays is home to a vast array of shopping facilities, including 6 shopping centres in the city centre alone. Most of the city's tourist attractions relate to its naval history. Many maritime museums dominate the tourist centre, as well as the Spinnaker Tower, a 552-foot tall tower in the harbour.
