Portuguese Facts
A Romance language, Portuguese originated in what is today Galicia and northern Portugal
Spanish is the most similar major world language to Portuguese, but there are major differences between the two, such as having very different words for common words, different spellings for similar sounds, consistently different word endings, and rules involving whether to use the definite article ('the') or not
Portuguese gets most of its vocabulary from Latin, but has had contributions from pre-Roman inhabitants of Portugal (such as the Phoenicians and Carthaginians), as well as acquiring over 1,000 words from Arabic from the influence of Moorish Iberia

Book now / EnquiryThese Portuguese courses are intended for people who really need to learn Portuguese to help make that difference in their work. For beginners, it will be useful to learn greetings and basic business etiquette, at higher levels reading and then writing become more important. Typical students include those involved in import/export, international negotiations and acquisitions, jobseekers in multinational companies where an additional language is required, and those working with international colleagues, academia and government. Even on our most basic course for Beginners, students should expect to end the course with basic Telephone Portuguese and e-mail Portuguese skills for communications as well as Survival Portuguese required for short visits to a country.
Book now / EnquiryThese Portuguese courses are more general in nature and are targeted at students with a whole range of different needs. While all beginners level students can expect to cover Survival Portuguese - required for short visits to a country where English may not be spoken and/or the intention is to make good contacts with the local population, students then generally progress in different directions depending on their needs. Typical students include those buying property overseas, spouses of overseas nationals, people about to set off on that long-awaited world trip, Portuguese culture enthusiasts and those who are keen to pass a particular Portuguese examination.
Book now / Enquiry2 or more people can benefit studying Portuguese together as these Portuguese courses are also offered to groups (Two-to-One Portuguese Course or Small Group In-Company Portuguese Course). Every student must have the same degree of knowledge of the language, the same business or language needs and the ability to study at the same time and place as everybody else. The booking has to be made for all students at the same time. Listen & Learn do not advocate group sessions of more than 6-8 people, though Taster Portuguese Courses can be experienced by up to 12 people.

Luton
A large town situated in the south of England, Luton has a population of around 185,000. The town is historically famous for hat making, though by the 20th century modern industries replaced this, including Vauxhall Motors opening the largest car plant in the UK in Luton in 1905 (used for the construction of tanks during the Second World War), which only recently closed in 2002. The culture of the city is diverse and rich due to the many and varied backgrounds of the people who live there. This is reflected in many of the festivals, parks and the nightlife of the town.
