En ocasiones, el español y el castellano se confunden y son empleados como términos semejantes, pero existen ciertos matices. Normalmente, en el ámbito internacional, el término utilizado para referirse al castellano es el español, tal y como llamamos a la lengua de Holanda, holandés, la de Francia, francés, o la de Rusia, ruso, etc. Sin embargo, en España, aunque la lengua oficial es el castellano, en algunas regiones también se hablan otras lenguas, como son el vasco, el valenciano o el catalán, que también son españoles.
Excepto el vasco, de origen prerromano, se cree que estas lenguas son el resultado de la evolución del latÃn, que introdujeron los romanos, aunque también del árabe, como resultado de la invasión musulmana.
Aproximadamente en el siglo XII, la distinta evolución en cada región, llevó al nacimiento de los dialectos romances, que fueron: el catalán, el navarro-aragonés, el castellano, el asturleonés, el gallego y el mozárabe.
Con el paso del tiempo, los romances catalán, gallego y castellano se constituyeron como lenguas. En cambio, los demás quedaron reducidos al habla familiar.
AsÃ, se considera que el catalán es una lengua románica que se formó en contacto con las regiones del sur de Francia. Hoy se habla en varias regiones pero en cada una de ellas con sus correspondientes variedades: en Cataluña, Baleares y Andorra.
En Cataluña y en Baleares el catalán es una lengua cooficial con el castellano, pero en Andorra, es la lengua oficial.
Otra lengua derivada del catalán es el valenciano, y también cuenta con sus propias peculiaridades.
