This was the time when grammar was still alive and kicking, and proper spelling was commonplace.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center; font-size: 20px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/spanish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Explore our list of language courses in your city or online and take your linguistic skills to the next level!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>New Words?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nIf we slip into my handy time machine for a few minutes and go back a couple of decades, we will see that few people other than the Slade used words that had been horribly abbreviated and mutilated. Nowadays, song titles like <i>Coz I Luv U<\/i> and <i>You Boyz Make Big Noize<\/i> look like they were written by someone making a genuine effort to follow the rules of English. Compare them to any modern text message written by a youngster and Noddy Holder comes across as a literary genius.<\/p>\n<p>C U L8R M8 LOL . Who wrote that; a human being or blooming R2-D2? These can\u2019t even be called new words, can they? It is just a lazy way of writing something without typing out the whole word.<\/p>\n<h2>The Generation Gap<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nThere are a good number of reasons why younger members of my family think I am a silly old fool. My insistence on listening to Bob Dylan and watching DVDs of Blackadder are just two of them. There is also the fact that I stubbornly continue to send my text messages in \u2013 gasp! \u2013 real English. Sure, sometimes I am tempted to write XOXO or R U 4 REAL or something equally hip.<\/p>\n<p>However, I just picture my old English teacher and immediately type in the proper words. I guess that it is a habit which some of us will never fall out of. I wonder what the future holds when we go the way of the dinosaurs and the whole world is populated by people who can only write in text shorthand. Will no one understand Shakespeare? Actually, I can barely understand Shakespeare as it is, so the future is looking bleak for the bard.<\/p>\n<h2>Not Just a Problem in English<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nOne of the interesting aspects of the death of grammar and proper spelling is that it isn\u2019t just limited to the English language. A quick piece of online investigation showed me that Spanish and Italian speakers are also worried about this modern phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some of my relatives send me abbreviated Spanish text messages and it is even more confusing than the shorthand used in English. X 100PRE. QDMS. D2. What can it all mean other than the last agonising death throes of grammar as we know it?<\/p>\n<p>Do you still use proper English in your text messages? Despite knowing approximately 3 words in Spanish when I first boarded a plane here, I have managed to survive, although with the occasional cringe-worthy misunderstanding along the way. My first Spanish classes were in Ecuador, where I also discovered what really happens to water when it goes down a drain on the equatorial line. After that, I started travelling South America and picking up as much of the language as I could. I am now married to a Bolivian and my daughter has Spanish as her first language but speaks English like a bonnie wee lassie from Braveheart. We travelled to Europe for a spell but we feel more at home here, with a laidback lifestyle and nice weather. Much of my Spanish I learned on the hoof, working in a bank in Spain and desperately trying to explain credit card charges to immigrants whose Spanish was as limited as mine. I also tried running a shop in Bolivia, which threw me in at the deep end. Nowadays, I work on my PC while learning new words from musical geniuses like Los Aut\u00e9nticos Decadentes and Celtas Cortos. My interesting career path really comes in useful at times as a freelance writer. I sometimes wonder if there is anyone else out there whose CV has UK mortgage underwriter and Bolivian pig farmer owner on it. If there is then I would love to hear from them.
