\"Mnemonics1\"<\/a>Spelling and pronouncing the word mnemonics is pretty challenging, but this memory technique is actually here to make our lives easier, and you\u2019ll be surprised how often you actually use it.<\/p>\n

A mnemonic device is simply a technique that helps us learn and retain information through simpler ways than the original format. There are several different types of techniques, but they all have the same end goal \u2013 to help us remember!<\/p>\n

The word mnemonic (pronounced new-mon-ick) comes from the Ancient Greek word for memory, and was used a lot back then to remember everything from prose and poems, to directions and geography \u2013 of course they didn\u2019t have pencils back then, let alone Sat Nav or computers!<\/p>\n

If you can think back to your school days, you\u2019ll recall being inundated with so much information that you needed<\/i> to develop ways to remember it all, and everyone had their own techniques, but some were more commonly used than others.<\/p>\n

Anyone who was schooled in England will remember the rhyme \u2018I before E, except after C\u2019;<\/i>\u00a0although this was an easy way to remember the grammar rule, it is no longer taught as there are almost 21 times the number of words that are exceptions to those that conform to it (see our previous article about rule breaking here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Another popular rhyming mnemonic is \u2018Red sky at night, shepherds\u2019 delight, red sky in the morning, shepherds\u2019 warning<\/i>\u2019, which reminds us that red sky in the evening usually means it should be fine the next day \u2013 but in the UK that\u2019s no guarantee!<\/p>\n

\"Mnemonics2\"<\/a>The most common mnemonic devices are those that help us to remember the order of things by using the first letter of the subjects in an easy-to-recall phrase. For instance, the order of planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto is simpler to remember by using these acronyms: M<\/i><\/b>y V<\/b>ery E<\/b>asy M<\/b>ethod J<\/b>ust S<\/b>peeds U<\/b>p N<\/b>aming P<\/b>lanets,<\/i> or M<\/i><\/b>y V<\/b>ery E<\/b>ducated M<\/b>other J<\/b>ust S<\/b>erved U<\/b>s N<\/b>ine P<\/b>izzas<\/i> \u2013 of course, these all predate Pluto being publicly humiliated and demoted to a star, but it\u2019s easy enough to drop the \u2018P\u2019.<\/p>\n

There are also acronym mnemonics to remember how to spell tricky words like RHYTHM: R<\/i><\/b>hythm H<\/b>elps Y<\/b>our T<\/b>wo H<\/b>ips M<\/b>ove<\/i>, or tricks to remember the correct spelling of ACCOMMODATION: Two c<\/b>ots need two m<\/b>attresses in any accommodation<\/i>, and PRINCIPAL v PRINCIPLE: Your principal<\/b> is your pal<\/i>.<\/p>\n

My favourite mnemonic that doesn\u2019t come in handy as much as I\u2019d like is a nautical related one that (not surprisingly) involves alcoholic beverages: Is there any red port left<\/i>? In that one little sentence we can now easily remember that in boating terminology port is to the left, and red lights signify port \u2013 ahoy me hearties!<\/p>\n
