Though tensions often seem to be ramped up between Russia and the rest of the world, nothing is ever likely to prevent East and West from coming together over a shared love of sport. Russians are as fanatical about sport as the rest of us, though of course they have their own favourite pastimes to both take part in and watch, with the likes of rugby and golf not particularly prominent on Sport 1 (\u0421\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0442 1<\/i>), their main channel for sports lovers.<\/p>\n

Here are a few of Russia\u2019s favourite sports, their current heroes and a few words you\u2019ll need if you want any chance of understanding the commentators.<\/p>\n

Football (<\/b>\u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e\u043b<\/i><\/b>)<\/b><\/h3>\n

Naturally Russia is obsessed with the global game, just like the rest of us (including the Americans now apparently, too). The Russian national team flatters to deceive at every major tournament, but their club sides are starting to edge into the global elite, with Zenit Saint Petersburg (\u0424\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e\u0301\u043b\u044c\u043d\u044b\u0439 \u043a\u043b\u0443\u0431 \u0417\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0301\u0442<\/i>) and CSKA Moscow (\u0426\u0421\u041a\u0410<\/i>) the leading lights. At the time of writing, Zenit are top of the Russian Premier League (\u0427\u0435\u043c\u043f\u0438\u043e\u043d\u0430\u0442 \u0420\u043e\u0441\u0441\u0438\u0438 \u043f\u043e \u0444\u0443\u0442\u0431\u043e\u043b\u0443<\/i>) with 25 points (\u0442\u043e\u0447\u043a\u0438<\/i>), 4 points ahead of CSKA. For the uninitiated, two teams of six take to the ice rink (\u0445\u043e\u043a\u043a\u0435\u0439\u043d\u0430\u044f \u043f\u043b\u043e\u0449\u0430\u0434\u043a\u0430<\/i>), engage in a face-off (\u0432\u0431\u0440\u0430\u0441\u044b\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0438\u0435<\/i>) to see who gets control of the puck (\u0448\u0430\u0439\u0431\u0430<\/i>), and then attempts to score before being flattened by a huge opponent in a face mask (\u043c\u0430\u0441\u043a\u0430<\/i>) with a massive stick (\u043a\u043b\u044e\u0448\u043a\u0430<\/i>). Of course, one of the stranger aspects of the sport is its propensity for fighting (\u0434\u0440\u0430\u043a\u0430<\/i>), which also goes by the quaint name of fisticuffs (\u043f\u043e\u0442\u0430\u0441\u043e\u0432\u043a\u0430<\/i>), and which brings us nicely onto our next sport.<\/p>\n

Boxing (<\/b>\u0431\u043e\u043a\u0441<\/i><\/b>)<\/b><\/h3>\n

Though the Klitschko brothers are Ukrainian, that didn\u2019t stop a great many Russians cheering the huge twosome when they destroyed their various opponents in the boxing ring (\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0433<\/i>) over the years. There have been two especially famous Russian fighters in the last couple of decades, however; Nikolai Valuev (\u041d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u043b\u0430\u0439 \u0412\u0430\u043b\u0443\u0435\u0432<\/i>) wasn\u2019t an especially good boxer but at seven foot tall his left jab (\u0443\u0434\u0430\u0440 \u0441\u043b\u0435\u0432\u0430<\/i>) often proved a very nasty weapon. And Kostya Tszyu (\u041a\u043e\u0441\u0442\u044f \u0426\u0437\u044e<\/i>) is widely regarded as one of the finest fighters ever to come out of Russia\u2026 which may be why they gloss over the fact that he emigrated to Australia following the collapse of the Soviet Union.<\/p>\n

Yevgeny Kafelnikov (\u0415\u0432\u0433\u0435\u043d\u0438\u0439 \u0410\u043b\u0435\u043a\u0441\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0440\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u041a\u0430\u0444\u0435\u043b\u044c\u043d\u0438\u043a\u043e\u0432<\/i>) and Marat Safin (\u041c\u0430\u0440\u0430\u0301\u0442 \u041c\u0443\u0431\u0438\u0301\u043d\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0447 \u0421\u0430\u0301\u0444\u0438\u043d<\/i>) both won a Grand Slam (\u0411\u043e\u043b\u044c\u0448\u043e\u0439 \u0428\u043b\u0435\u043c<\/i>) tennis tournament each, but far more interest appears to be given to Russia\u2019s female tennis stars, for some reason.
