In the age of cheap airfares and routes to almost everywhere in the world, getting to a foreign destination is a pretty simple business. But once you\u2019re there, travelling\u00a0from A to B within a country can be a daunting affair, with phrases to pick up and vocabulary to understand to make sure you don\u2019t accidentally end up stranded in the middle of nowhere.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s particularly important in a country like Brazil \u2013 the largest country in the Southern Hemisphere and fifth biggest in the world.\u00a0Here are some\u00a0top phrases to\u00a0take with you before attempting to get about:<\/p>\n

Onde posso alugar uma bicicleta?<\/h2>\n

Two-wheeled travel is an option in some of the bigger Brazilian cities, particularly in Rio de Janeiro where authorities have invested heavily in a bike-hire scheme called Bike Rio<\/a>. Asking this question, meaning \u2018Where can I hire a bicycle?<\/b>\u2019, will hopefully allow a Brazilian to point you towards the nearest bicycle rack, though if you want to use the system and you don\u2019t speak Portuguese, you may have ask a carioca<\/i> (a local) to help you.<\/p>\n

Me leve para (Foz do Igua\u00e7u), por favor<\/h2>\n

This is the best way to relay to a taxi driver exactly where you want to go \u2013 it means \u2018Take me to (Foz do Igua\u00e7u), please<\/b>\u2019. To call a taxi in the first place, is\u00a0a nice and easy word to remember - t\u00e1xi<\/i>!<\/p>\n

And why would you want to go to Foz do Igua\u00e7u? It is the town on the Brazilian side of the famous Iguazu Falls, the spectacular waterfalls where Brazil meets both Argentina and Paraguay.<\/p>\n

Quero alugar um carro<\/h2>\n

If you\u2019d rather get yourself about this phrase will be very useful, as it means simply \u2018I want to hire a car<\/b>\u2019. To hire a car in Brazil you must be at least 21 years old (though some car hire companies have a higher\u00a0age limit of 25), you must have a credit card in your name, plus a valid driver\u2019s license from your home country.<\/p>\n

Quanto custa ir para (Ouro Preto)?<\/h2>\n

To find out in advance how much it will take to get somewhere in Brazil, use the phrase \u2018quanto custa ir para...<\/i>\u2019 \u2013 \u2018how much does it cost to get to<\/b>...\u2019 And Ouro Preto offers a fine excuse to ask the question, as one of Brazil\u2019s best-preserved colonial towns, founded at the end of the 17th century with a name meaning \u2018black gold\u2019.<\/p>\n

Trains are an enjoyable and popular mode of travel across the world, though most trains in Brazil these days carry cargo rather than passengers. There are a couple of excellent routes left though, such as the mountain route from Curitiba to Paranagu\u00e1, and our Portuguese question above will allow you to ask directions to the nearest train station<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Both Rio and S\u00e3o Paulo have excellent metro systems \u2013 a safe, cheap and efficient way of exploring each city. S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s system has five lines, and though Rio\u2019s only has four it\u2019s a bit more complicated, so a map would certainly be handy.<\/p>\n

An even cheaper way to get around is on the bus, but it\u2019s always handy to know you\u2019re getting on a bus that\u2019s going in the right direction. This question, meaning, \u2018Where does this bus terminate<\/b>?\u2019, could spare you an expensive return trip in a country that has over two and a half thousand miles between its furthest apart borders.<\/p>\n

Esse barco \u00e9 seguro?<\/h2>\n

One of the most impressive ways to get around Brazil, albeit only specific parts of Brazil, is by boat. River travel remains the principal form of passenger transportation for huge parts of the country, with boats of all shapes and sizes making their way up and down the Amazon and the various tributaries and creeks off it. And the question to ask as you stare skeptically at the various vessels\u00a0offering to take you is \u2018\u00c9 este barco seguro?<\/i>\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Is this boat safe<\/b>?\u2019 \u2013 not that the answer is ever likely to be anything but \u2018Sim, claro<\/i>\u2019: \u2018Yes, of course!\u2019<\/p>\n
