In every corner both known and unknown, English has infiltrated other languages in various ways like those weeds that mess up many a person\u2019s driveway. We\u2019re sorry about that.\u00a0Still. There really is no need for us to be so lazy when it comes to learning a little language when we go on holiday. There simply is no excuse anymore, not with the variety of ways to learn languages that are currently available to us all.\u00a0Please do not rely purely on Google Translate. The earliest version of Swedish can be dated back to around the 8th century in the form of Old East Norse.\u00a0Swedish has the usual 26 letters of the Roman alphabet plus the three additional vowels of <i>\u00e5<\/i>, <i>\u00e4<\/i> and <i>\u00f6<\/i>.\u00a0So that\u2019s the linguistic bit.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever had fun trying to pronounce the titles of things in Ikea (come on\u2026. you know you have), you are probably aware of the somewhat \u2018clipped\u2019 tone of Swedish. (cheers!) for when\u00a0you play THAT drinking game. You know the one.\u00a0If you\u2019re lost (<strong><i>Jag \u00e4r vilse<\/i><\/strong>) and getting a little irate, a friendly Swede might say<strong> <i>tagga ned<\/i><\/strong> which literally means \u2018tag down\u2019 but is the Swedish version of \u2018chill\u2019.\u00a0Your waiter may say to you <strong><i>Smaklig m\u00e5ltid!<\/i><\/strong> (bon appetit), to which you should respond once it\u2019s finished with, <strong><i>det smakade utm\u00e4rkt<\/i> <\/strong>(it\u2019s delicious). Assuming that it is delicious. Which, of course, it will be.\u00a0Finally, <strong><i>var finns apotek?<\/i><\/strong> (where is the pharmacy) might be useful after a heavy night out, or, if that\u2019s too much, you can just opt for<strong><i> jag har en baksm\u00e4lla<\/i> <\/strong>(I have a hangover) and roll back over to sleep until you recover. Many a Swede will sympathise with your <strong><i>bakfylle\u00e5ngest <\/i><\/strong>(hangover anxiety), so you will be met with understanding. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
