But with around 6% of the world\u2019s population declaring themselves as addicted, perhaps a fairer classification of our reliance on the internet should be <i>dependent\/co-dependent<\/i>. It\u2019s either that, or Cyberdyne\u2019s actually a bigger threat to us than Facebook, and we\u2019re all blissfully ignorant as Skynet takes us over quietly, one Tweet at a time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3698\" style=\"width: 558px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Photo_11.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3698\" class=\"wp-image-3698\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Photo_11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"548\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Photo_11.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Photo_11-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Photo_11-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What are you looking so smug about? via Youtube \/ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6CXaukEakHw\" target=\"_blank\">Youtube<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The internet really has leached into our day to day language in ways we probably don\u2019t even think about anymore: who doesn\u2019t say \u2018I\u2019m gonna Google it\u2019 when we need to look something up, for example?<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, let\u2019s take a look at some of the most common internet slang out there, and see if we can broaden your (virtual) horizons a little.<\/p>\n<p><b>TL:DR<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a fan of a ranter, this little abbreviation is something you\u2019re probably already familiar with, even if you\u2019re not entirely sure what it means yet. <i>Too Long: Didn\u2019t Read<\/i>, means that the post you are currently viewing is potentially longer than your attention span, and the entire piece of text can probably be summarised in under five words. Or that the reader got bored halfway through, and has no idea what the post is actually about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3695\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I2.png 300w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I2-276x300.png 276w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>alsdfjowijfdfmsdlfe<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is a term of approval, and can be recreated with any such combination of letters on your keyboard: think of it like a typed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearnusa.com\/blog\/slang-2016-just-where-are-we\/\" target=\"_blank\">glomp<\/a>. It is to express extreme excitement at something you have just read; be it an epic, canonically correct fanfic or a particularly witty burn on Twitter, your random key selection will show the author of said piece just how thrilled you are to be witnessing their words in action.<\/p>\n<p><b>SMH<\/b><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting that with the internet, <i>slang <\/i>has become interchangeable with <i>acronym <\/i>for so many words and phrases. This one is no different: <i>SMH <\/i>is <i>Shake My Head<\/i>, and it means that the reader has found something so unbelievably stupid that they just can\u2019t believe it, and therefore, are shaking their heads in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p><b>Facepalm<\/b><\/p>\n<p>While on the subject of this \u2018extreme stupidity\u2019 thing; to <i>facepalm <\/i>is to react with such horror to someone\u2019s idiocy that you slap yourself hard in the face with your palm, with that satisfying splatting sound. It can be used to express utter dismay, or disappointment, or even blatant disapproval. And talking of disapproval, let\u2019s add the <i>Headdesk<\/i> to the mix. The <i>headdesk <\/i>is the ultimate facepalm, when supreme stupidity leaves you smashing your head into your desk and crying for the loss of faith in all humanity (crying is optional).<\/p>\n<p><b>IMO\/IMHO<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>In My Opinion\/In My Humble Opinion<\/i> has been around a while now, and is kind of a granddaddy of internet slang. It\u2019s a way of saying, hey there, lovely reader, what I\u2019m about to say is my own, personal opinion, and I do not proclaim to be saying anything profound (although possibly, I am). This short little word is often the spark for riotous internet debates\/snarling matches, whether the writer is intending to be inflammatory or not.<\/p>\n<p><b>HIFW\/MFW\/MRW\/MIRL<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>(How I Felt When\/My Face When\/My Reaction When\/Me In Real Life)<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Because these are all quite interchangeable, it\u2019s easier to present them all together in a neat little bundle of explanation. These acronyms will be found littering all your favourite social media feeds, coupled with a GIF or screenshot of **insert character** pulling a particular face (essential for MFW), or some other reaction along with a funny caption that summarises a mood for something that is trending at a particular time. Like Dawson here. Hey, Dawson, it\u2019s not all that bad, we promise!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3696\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"594\" height=\"458\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I3.png 594w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I3-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 594px) 100vw, 594px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>NSFW <\/b><\/p>\n<p>One of this author\u2019s personal favourites since they spend far too much of their free time on <a href=\"http:\/\/archiveofourown.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">AO3<\/a>, this one means <i>Not Safe For Work<\/i>. It can be anything from fanart of your favourite OTP in an angelic embrace (for the SPNers out there\u2026 you know who you are, and you know what we mean\u2026), to rude vegetables doing unspeakable things that will make your prude of a boss blush if you\u2019re lucky\/unlucky enough to have one of those. Essentially it means: open with caution.<\/p>\n<p><b>TBT<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i>Throwback Thursday<\/i> is an opportunity to get on the nostalgia posting bandwagon and increase your hit rate or number of likes by dredging up images from your past. Common initially on Instagram, this piece of internet slang has become one of the backbones of the social media way of life. A related acronym that is seen all over Twitter is the <i>#FF<\/i> or <i>#FollowFriday<\/i>, and is basically a shout out to any follower profiles that you really appreciate and want other followers to hear about. Hint hint\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3697\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"611\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I4.png 611w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I4-300x239.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 611px) 100vw, 611px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>404 - page not found<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This one\u2019s probably one of the newer acronyms out there, but it makes us giggle a lot. When you get an error message that tells you your favourite site is not loading because either the link is broken or a page cannot be reached on the server, this is the message you commonly get. But in slangland, it means the writer of said text is clueless, and doesn\u2019t understand what you have said, or what is going on.<\/p>\n<p><b>HBU<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is the lazy way of getting someone else\u2019s opinion. <i>How about you<\/i> is usually written following your own lengthy soapbox spiel (or short one, depending on how fast you type), when you want to gauge what your audience\/fellow messenger is thinking. It is <i>not<\/i> to be confused in any way with HMU, which is <i>hit me up<\/i>, and means <i>I\u2019m bored and have nothing to do; provide me with entertainment<\/i>. Or, according to one user of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=HMU\" target=\"_blank\">Urban Dictionary<\/a>, means <i>Hold My Unicorn<\/i>. But of course.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3694\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I1.png 587w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/I1-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>IRL<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Finally, because many internet users often forget this, <i>In Real Life<\/i> means there\u2019s another world out there beyond the screen you\u2019re currently looking at. And real people too, if you like that sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Or maybe it\u2019s just reflective of a lifetime spent online on our phones, and that has carried over to our actual keyboards as well. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
