{"id":3829,"date":"2016-06-27T20:37:53","date_gmt":"2016-06-27T20:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/?p=3829"},"modified":"2017-08-23T16:11:53","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T16:11:53","slug":"travel-tuesday-get-lost-in-lithuania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/travel-tuesday-get-lost-in-lithuania\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel Tuesday: Get Lost in Lithuania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lithuania is a Baltic State country, a former Soviet bloc nation that borders Poland, Latvia and Belarus (keep that in mind next time you are writing or participating in a pub quiz\u2026)<\/p>\n<p>With the Euro as its currency and prices generally being a little lower than almost-neighbouring Riga, Capital city Vilnius is definitely somewhere that you should stick on your list of places to go.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a look at this beautiful city to give you a taster of what to expect.<\/p>\n<p><b>Starting with a little culture\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The <i>Republic of U\u017eupis<\/i> is said to be the heart of Vilnius, and is also often referred to as being a country within a country. It is a small, mock republic formed by local artists that was declared as independent back in 1997. Of the 0.60 square kilometres <i>U\u017eupis<\/i> occupies, there are 7000 inhabitants, 1000 of which are artists. It even has three mottos: \"Don't Fight\", \"Don't Win\", \"Don't Surrender\".<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3830\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_1-21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3830\" class=\"wp-image-3830 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_1-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Gates of Dawn via <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Vilnius_Dawn_Gate.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><i>The Gates of Dawn<\/i> is a city gate in Vilnius, and is considered to be one of the most important cultural, historical and religious monuments of the city. Built somewhere between 1503 and 1522, <i>The Gates of Dawn<\/i> are a must see, whether your interest is in architecture, history, or religion. It is also a pathway to a good number of cafes down a long, cobbled street that makes you feel as though you might be stepping back through time.<\/p>\n<p>If parks and peace and quiet for an hour or two are what you are after, a good choice would be either <i>Marku\u010diai Mansion Park<\/i> which is a cozy little park with a historical feel to it, or <i>Bernardine Gardens<\/i>, complete with water fountain, botanical gardens, and the River Vilnele nearby.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <a href=\"http:\/\/rudninkuknygynas.lt\/lt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Rudninku Knygynas<\/i><\/a> might not strictly be a cultural place worthy of visit, but it is absolutely worth a visit nonetheless. This tiny establishment is part bookshop, part art exhibition, and part place to learn about and play vinyl. You will even find a good selection of magazines and music in English if you don\u2019t feel confident trying out the local Lithuanian language!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3831\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_2-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3831\" class=\"wp-image-3831 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_2-2.jpg 311w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_2-2-300x156.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Economy_of_Lithuania\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><i>S<\/i><\/strong><b>omething to eat and drink?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Because there is always something to learn from a city\u2019s street market area, the <i>Open Market<\/i>, Vilnius\u2019 street market, is definitely worth a look. At Tymo Turgus in U\u017eupis, you will find delicious food from the city\u2019s restaurants, bistros and cafes on display here, as well as from local farmers and independent chefs bringing their own flavours to the streets. Lunch, after work snacks, beer; the choices here feel a little endless and are worth investigating.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to check in with work but are also in need of a caffeine fix, look no further than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cofficevilnius\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Coffice<\/i><\/a>. It is a cozy working space with excellent wifi, the perfect coffee, and deep, plush sofas to sink in should you want to take a few moments away from your laptop screen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Check out our\u00a0<\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/level-tests.php\">free placement test<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><b>to see how your level measures up!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>If it is beer you are after then the place you need to head to is <a href=\"http:\/\/spunka.lt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>\u0160punka<\/i><\/a>. Beers served here come directly from local microbreweries, giving you a fresh beer perspective away from the more typical Lithuanian beers.<\/p>\n<p>Want to try some authentic Lithuanian food? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.snekucio-alaus-pasaulis.lt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>\u0160nekutis<\/i><\/a>is the place for you! Cheap food that is served in huge portions alongside excellent local beer by eccentric staff in a place that looks cobbled together by the most random of objects, this is a real non-touristy place for you to visit to satisfy your hunger.<\/p>\n<p><b>How about some nightlife?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re glad you asked.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ClubEXIT\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Exit Vilnius<\/i><\/a> is considered the best club in the country, with incredible light displays, music from international DJs, and of course, dancing by those with the most beautiful moves. Entrance is cheap, from three euros, and it stays open until 5am most mornings so you can dance and welcome in the morning sun.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/pabolatino.lt\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Pabo Latino<\/i><\/a> has both live and DJ-ed music, serving the 20s and 30s crowds over three halls and two bars. There is a tough-but-fair door policy which means once you\u2019re inside you are not going to be bothered by undesirables, and on certain nights you might even be lucky enough to get some free Latino dance classes. Entrance is either free, or between five and ten euros, depending on when you go.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3832\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_3-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3832\" class=\"wp-image-3832 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Photo_3-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old Town, Vilnius via <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Old_town_Vilnius_city_centre_(7630927570).jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>And finally\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>May we suggest a visit to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/v.terasa\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Vasaros Terasa<\/i><\/a>. This is, unsurprisingly, a terrace area. It is a dance floor, a weekend market, a live music venue, and many other things. In essence, it is everything, all at once, evolving all the time. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
