Are there really enough resources out there for learners to use, and communicate in, to give Esperanto a chance?<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look!<\/p>\n<p><b>Websites<\/b><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3920\" style=\"width: 645px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3920\" class=\"wp-image-3920\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"635\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_1.jpg 988w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_1-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Esperanto_melono.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two essential websites for Esperanto speakers are <a href=\"https:\/\/esperanto-usa.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\">Esperanto USA<\/a>, which gives resources for learning the language, meeting with fellow speakers, and all kinds of literature sources, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esperanto.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Esperanto.net<\/a> which gives information about Esperanto in multiple languages.<\/p>\n<p>Esperanto has its own <a href=\"https:\/\/eo.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vikipedio:%C4%88efpa%C4%9Do\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a> page, and if you choose to it is also possible to use Google in Esperanto - as well as, perhaps obviously, use Google Translate. <a href=\"http:\/\/tejo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tejo<\/a> is an aesthetically pleasing and beautiful website in Esperanto which focuses on encouraging young Esperanto speakers to connect, and also offers versions of some of its content in other languages in case you need to refer back to your original language whilst you are learning.<\/p>\n<p>How about watching TV in Esperanto? Well, there are a couple of choices, actually. <a href=\"https:\/\/esperanto-tv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Esperanto TV<\/a> is where you want to head, and here you will find listings, links to channels like ETV and ZamTV, and also radio stations purely in Esperanto.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the forum over at <a href=\"http:\/\/lernu.net\/en\/forumo\" target=\"_blank\">Lernu<\/a> is a great place for learner to share and discuss ideas, as well as practice.<\/p>\n<p>So far, it would seem, that our hunt for resources in Esperanto is going well!<\/p>\n<p><b>The big and small screen<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We mentioned TV in Esperanto, but how about films and TV shows?<\/p>\n<p>To date there are only four features films shot entirely in Esperanto. These are: <i>Angoroj <\/i>and <i>Incubus<\/i>, both filmed in the 1960s, and the more \u2018recent\u2019 <i>Gerda malaperis<\/i> and <i>La patro<\/i>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0059311\/\" target=\"_blank\">Incubus<\/a> has a bit of a cult following because it stars the glorious William Shatner, who plays an injured soldier named Marc who has to navigate his way through a strange seaside community called Nomen Tuum.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3921\" style=\"width: 451px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_21.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3921\" class=\"wp-image-3921\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"441\" height=\"565\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_21.jpg 1093w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_21-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Photo_21-799x1024.jpg 799w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 441px) 100vw, 441px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3921\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Shatner\" target=\"_blank\">Wikimedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>There have been sporadic uses of Esperanto in various TV shows and a few documentaries, but that is where the trail seems to end. It is beginning to look like there are not a great amount of Esperanto viewing resources out there at all\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>Learning a new language? Check out our\u00a0<\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/level-tests.php\">free placement test<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><b>to see how your level measures up!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Saved by literature?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Before we start to panic that there simply isn\u2019t enough for Esperanto users to practice their language in or simply enjoy the language with, let us see what is on offer in terms of finding something to read.<\/p>\n<p>There are around 25,000 book titles published in Esperanto, with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uea.org\/\">Universal Esperanto Association<\/a> offering the most material. <i>Henri Vallienne<\/i> is thought to be one of the first authors to publish an Esperanto novel, and <i>Harold Brown<\/i> has written a number of modern plays in the language.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gutenberg.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Project Gutenberg<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/manybooks.net\/language.php?code=eo\" target=\"_blank\">Many Books<\/a> offer a number of titles in Esperanto, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/list\/show\/15238.Best_Esperanto_Books\" target=\"_blank\">Good Reads<\/a> offers a number of suggestions for best Esperanto reads along with a few reviews for these books - although it has to be said that the number of reviews compared with other language titles is relatively few.<\/p>\n<p><b>Let\u2019s hear it for social media\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p>.... Especially if you are a fan of keeping Esperanto alive!<\/p>\n<p>Facebook already offers its users the opportunity to use the platform in Esperanto, and Twitter is currently working with translators to do the same. Twitter also has hundreds of accounts that are great to follow if you are looking for additional links for things to help you practice. And where else would we have discovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=exIDp2vlkmw&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">this beautiful cover<\/a> of Adele\u2019s <i>Hello<\/i> in Esperanto?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/I1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3919\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/I1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/I1.png 621w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/I1-300x217.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 621px) 100vw, 621px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tumblr has a number of blogs that are either dedicated to or use a large amount of Esperanto, but one of the best places to go if you are looking to contact with fellow Esperanto-ers is actually Reddit. There are numerous Reddit threads and Subreddits for Esperanto, and these in turn provide you with links for other resources that you might not have even considered. Vlogger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=kpeqSgVQou8&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\">Evildea<\/a> posted on a subreddit offering World of Warcraft tutorials in Esperanto, and Reddit user <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/Moosader\" target=\"_blank\">Mooseader<\/a> has produced a number of small phone app games purely in Esperanto as well.<\/p>\n<p><b>Feeling hopeful...<\/b><\/p>\n<p>We come away from investigating the available Esperanto resources cautiously optimistic. Although it has been a somewhat hit and miss search, we think we have discovered enough to help those who are interested in finding out more, and want to converse in and practice using this intriguing constructed language.<\/p>\n<p>Next time we will be taking a look at that sporadic use of Esperanto in some of our favourite pop culture. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. My focus when writing for Listen and Learn is on language and travel, but away from that, I like to write a lot about animals and the environment. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
