\n<\/strong>
\nThree words, one big confusion. I only learned \u201ccasa\u201d - as in \u201chouse\u201d - in my Spanish courses<\/a> but I then realised that \u201ccazar\u201d is to hunt and \u201ccasar\u201d (which sounds the same as cazar in Latin America) means to marry. To get over this three word conundrum I came up with a rather bizarre scene in my head where a maiden aunt goes out to hunt a bachelor to take home. I won\u2019t say which family members or ex work colleagues appear in the mental sketch I made up but I am sure that you could come up with the characters from your own life anyway.<\/p>\n

Sinatra\u2019s Greatest Exits<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I started looking for CDs across here I noticed that a lot of them were called \u201cgrandes \u00e9xitos\u201d. I guessed that this didn\u2019t mean \u201cbig exits\u201d, and my faithful dictionary confirmed that it was actually \u201cgreatest hits\u201d, or something similar. That didn\u2019t stop me thinking that the exit to a building was also an \u00e9xito, though. In my Spanish classes<\/a> I had discovered that this is actually the \u201csalida\u201d but I still kept on making the same mistake. To try and sort things out I came up with one of my weird ideas. Frank Sinatra is walking towards the exit from the stage singing his greatest hits when he starts on the Spanish version of \u201cMy Way\u201d and the English exit sign changes to \u201csalida\u201d. I have no idea how or why this worked for me but the word was never a problem for me again. <\/p>\n

Much of my Spanish I learned on the hoof, working in a bank in Spain and desperately trying to explain credit card charges to immigrants whose Spanish was as limited as mine. I also tried running a shop in Bolivia, which threw me in at the deep end. Nowadays, I work on my PC while learning new words from musical geniuses like Los Aut\u00e9nticos Decadentes and Celtas Cortos. My interesting career path really comes in useful at times as a freelance writer. I sometimes wonder if there is anyone else out there whose CV has UK mortgage underwriter and Bolivian pig farmer owner on it. If there is then I would love to hear from them.
