Our message here today is twofold; first, to give you a few examples of non-English artists who might enhance your own language learning journey, and second, to provide inspiration through bands and artists whose first language isn\u2019t English, yet produce their music in it. There may be earworms ahead; you have been warned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4302\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pexels-photo-12544.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4302\" class=\"wp-image-4302 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pexels-photo-12544.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pexels-photo-12544.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/pexels-photo-12544-300x199.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/guitar-music-black-and-white-sound-12544\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pexels<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>1. Rammstein<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It would probably be a failure on our parts not to have Rammstein on the list of \u2018famous artists who don\u2019t sing in English\u2019. With German as their native language, Rammstein have amassed a huge following of people who understand their lyrics word for word, and others who just mouth along, or who have been encouraged to learn German by listening to songs like <i>Sonne<\/i> and <i>Ich Will<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>2. Sigur R\u00f3s<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This Icelandic band has been around since 1997 and their style straddles a fair few genres, from experimental rock to dream pop. Okay; perhaps Icelandic isn\u2019t on the list of most popular languages to learn, but give this band a listen and you might start asking why. And if the name Sigur R\u00f3s is floating on your peripheral, it might be due to Game of Thrones; Joffrey threw money at them to stop them singing not long before meeting his very timely death in The Lion and The Rose. Karma, and all that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>3. Zaz<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This French singer-songwriter has been gracing us with her beautiful voice and lyrics since 2001. Like Ed Sheeran, Zaz started her singing career busking, and is now an international star with fans the world over. Zaz is credited with being one of the artists to help reshape France\u2019s music scene.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>4. TFBoys<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite the unfortunate label of \u2018China\u2019s answer to Justin Bieber\u2019, this boyband have, since 2013, been praised by both fans and China\u2019s mainstream media alike for their uplifting songs that have matured along with its members. It\u2019s near on impossible to find a band more wholesome; you are far more likely to hear about this Mandarin-speaking group\u2019s performance in school than you are to hear any instances of unseemly behaviour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Check out our <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/level-tests\" target=\"_blank\"><b>free placement test<\/b><\/a><b> to see how your level measures up!<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Singing in English<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And now it\u2019s over to those artists who do just that - but aren\u2019t native English speakers themselves\u2026<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4300\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Photo_2.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4300\" class=\"wp-image-4300 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Photo_2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4300\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GIF via <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/govballnyc-of-monsters-and-men-governors-ball-gov-2016-3o7qEcyuZlnMvGt0f6\" target=\"_blank\">Giphy<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>5. Of Monsters and Men<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This band from Reykjavik are one of those who contribute a lot to discussions that generally begin with \u2018they\u2019re not English? How?\u2019 because there is no way of knowing from the way they sound that their native language isn\u2019t actually English. Their song <i>Little Talks<\/i> had a period of seeming to be on every advert out there, and the band are currently touring to promote their album <i>Beneath The Skin<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>6. Tiffany<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Tiffany is from Girls\u2019 <i>Generation\/SNSD<\/i>, a hugely popular South Korean girl group who are at the forefront of much of the rise of K-pop. Tiffany\u2019s solo career is a huge success as well, singing in both Korean and English. Her debut solo album and single of the same name, <i>I Just Wanna Dance<\/i>, was released in May 2016, much to the delight of her international fanbase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>7. Bj\u00f6rk<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There isn\u2019t anything that really needs to be said about Bj\u00f6rk, is there? This Icelandic artist is a singer, songwriter, producer, DJ, and actress, with a career that has seen her win multiple international awards. Bj\u00f6rk is the epitome of what it means to be an individual, and whilst her English may still at times have a clipped quality about it, there is no doubt that she is confident in its use, both lyrically and in conversation.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4301\" style=\"width: 369px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Photo_3.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4301\" class=\"wp-image-4301 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Photo_3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GIF via <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/tovelo-l0Ex8TAzURLBUITTi\" target=\"_blank\">Giphy<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>8. The Rasmus<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The Rasmus blasted on to our MTV screens with various versions of music videos for their song <i>In The Shadows<\/i> in 2003, but by then, the album the song came from, <i>Dead Letters<\/i>, was in fact their fifth studio album - The Rasmus have been around a while. All of their studio albums are produced in English, and it is a strange thing to hear Lauri Yl\u00f6nen sing in his native Finnish when we are so used to hearing him in English.<\/p>\n<p><b>9. Tove Lo<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Tove Lo is a Swedish singer-songwriter who is another of those \u2018I can\u2019t believe they\u2019re not English\u2019 artists - you really cannot tell from any of her music that English isn\u2019t her native tongue. Tove Lo has been supplying us with electropop to fill our clubs since 2006, and doesn\u2019t look in danger of going out of favour any time soon.<\/p>\n<p>So. Whilst we\u2019re not necessarily suggesting the best way to improve your English is to start a music career in your target language, we hope you\u2019ve been inspired enough by the artists above to get back to your language studies\u2026 or at least to find some music to help you learn!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We might have mentioned this once or twice before, but we are big believers that listening to music is a great way to help you learn a language.
