But did you know that Cornwall, one of the most beautiful counties on the southwestern coast of England, also has its own language; one that is recognised as a minority language by the EU, and that the good people of Cornwall have long been campaigning for it to become official? It could be heard as far as Exeter, some 86 miles away\u2014perhaps not all that impressive in distance, but effectively this meant Cornish was spoken across the entire southwestern tip of England at one point.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Untitled2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4588\" src=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Untitled2.png\" alt=\"Untitled\" width=\"407\" height=\"176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Untitled2.png 407w, https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Untitled2-300x129.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 407px) 100vw, 407px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cornish began to diverge from the Welsh language around the 7th century, and its earliest known written examples date back to the 9th\u2014scribbles found in the margin of a Latin text! Cornish began to go extinct in the nineteenth century, and has seen a few attempts at rival since; first by scholar Henry Jenner, who discovered lines from a medieval Cornish play in a 14th century manuscript in the British Museum, and far more recently by various enthusiasts, including Celtic scholar Nicholas Williams, and Richard Gendall of the Cornish Language Council. It has a standard written form using the Latin alphabet, devised in 1995 by Nicholas Williams as the UCR\u2014Unified Cornish Revised (Kernowek Unys Amendys). Its current language status according to the Ethnologue is <i>reawakening<\/i>, whereas UNESCO\u2019s Atlas Of World Languages lists Cornish as <i>critically endangered<\/i>. Glass half full and all that.<\/p>\n<p>Cornish phonology is fairly similar to all other Breton languages, though its grammar, along with other Celtic languages, is atypical of Indo-European languages in general\u2014namely for initial consonant mutations, verb-subject-object word order, inflected prepositions (special combinations of prepositions and pronouns), fronting of emphasised syntactic elements, and two different forms for \"to be\".<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Verbs are conjugated for tense and mood, and Cornish lacks verbs that are found in other languages; things like modals, and psych-verbs (such as hate, prefer, and like). There are also religious services, residential courses, children\u2019s play groups, and self-help groups that are conducted solely in Cornish\u2014some of which can be found as far away from Cornwall as London and Australia!<\/p>\n<p>There is an increasing amount of literature available in Cornish, from textbooks and children's books to poetry and novels. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
