But if you look at any <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top ten most widely spoken language<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> list, and there will be all sorts of other languages that are worth your consideration. This time, Punjabi is taking its turn in the spotlight. The rest are L2 speakers who make up the Punjabi diaspora across the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two major dialects of Punjabi: Eastern, spoken by 29 million, and Western, spoken by around 93 million. The shortfall here is made up of other, smaller dialects; Greater Panjabi, as it is technically known, is more of a series of dialects than one language.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Basics and a little history<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjabi is an Indo-Aryan language that is generally ranked ninth or tenth on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most popular<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> language lists. It uses two writing systems: Shahmukhi \u2014 a Perso-Arabic alphabet ( \u0633\u062a \u0633\u0650\u0631\u06cc \u0627\u064e\u06a9\u0627\u0644), and Gurmukhi \u2014 a modified Sikh script (\u0a38\u0a24\u0a3f \u0a38\u0a4d\u0a30\u0a40 \u0a05\u0a15\u0a3e\u0a32\u0964).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Punjabi diaspora reaches far and wide to include countries such as Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Canada, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjabi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> derives from the Persian word for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five waters<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which refers to the five tributaries of the Indus river. This neutral tone makes up around 75 percent of Punjabi words, which some describe as having an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of tone. It is the only Indo-Aryan language to use tones, and as with all tonal languages not paying attention to the different tones might mean the difference between making friends and making enemies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u00e0r (high-falling) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">house<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u00e1r (low-rising) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dandruff<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kar (level) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do\/hands<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u00f2\u1e5b\u0101 (high-falling) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">horse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k\u00f3\u1e5b\u0101 (low-rising) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leper<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ko\u1e5b\u0101 (level) <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whip<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Punjabi has a ten-vowel system of three lax and seven tense vowels. Lax vowels are short, and tense long, and can be oral or nasal. There are twenty-eight consonants in Punjabi, and unlike other Indo-Aryan languages Punjabi, does not have aspirated voice stops. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Adjectives are declinable and indeclinable. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. My focus when writing for Listen and Learn is on language and travel, but away from that, I like to write a lot about animals and the environment. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
