Us in the Northern Hemisphere are used to cosy images of lit menorahs and their beautiful dancing candlelight in the darkness, but <\/span><b>for the Jewish community in Australia, Hanukkah happens in the sun<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">! From block parties that celebrate the festivities to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Chanukahinthepark\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chanukah In The Park<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> complete with <\/span><b>fireworks and concerts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Australia offers a s<\/span><b>unny alternative to this holiday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 why not soak that up!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>China<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Kaifeng, China, <\/span><b>Hanukkah is an intimate affair<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so don't be expecting an open invitation! The Jewish community here is centuries old and incredibly close-knit. Celebrations tend to be just as private with menorah lighting and Torah readings in shared venues or homes since the city doesn't have a synagogue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Yet perhaps in India more than anywhere else they can also look so different! The Star of David is made into a Hanukkiya and is used more commonly than a traditional menorah. <\/span><b>Indian Jews also use coconut oil to light the lamps instead of the Hanukkah candles we see in the rest of the world.<\/b> <b>The Bene Israel Jewish community in Mumbai is possibly the largest in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sharing candle-lighting evenings in synagogues and the homes of families and friends. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gulab Jamon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a type of doughnut, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burfi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a kind of confectionary, are the traditional sweet treats eaten here for Hanukkah. Though when it comes to cuisine a Moroccan Hanukkah is different indeed! On the third night of the Festival of Lights it is traditional to eat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sfenj<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are a kind of doughnut dusted with sugar and flavoured with the juice and zest of oranges. Couscous is a staple ingredient as you might expect from Morocco, and in the city of Fez they go a step further for Hanukkah, where couscous is served with caramelised onions and fried almonds, with cinnamon and sugar to dust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Yemen<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In commemoration of Hannah from the Book of the Maccabees, t<\/span><b>he seventh day of the Hanukkah holiday in Yemen is considered to be a woman's holiday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In celebration of the heroines of this story, this seventh night marks the beginning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chag Ha'Banot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daughter's Festival<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Mothers give their daughters gifts and visit synagogues to pray for the health of their daughters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Women of all ages come together overcoming any differences they might have had throughout the year, usually over a feast that is largely made up of cheese dishes. Another difference to Hanukkah in Yemen to what you might not be used to back home is that children go from house to house with tins to collect wicks for the menorah. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Philadelphia<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since many people only have to hear the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanukkah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to taste latkes, what would this holiday be without gorging ourselves on these moorish delights? Philadelphia only encourages that indulgence further by hosting an event called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/995027710596368\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LatkePalooza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where local eateries provide a feast with their own special spin on latkes. <\/span><b>LatkePalooza is now in its 15th year!<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can try everything from the street food equivalent to a gourmet take on this Hanukkah dish, so if you go, do so on an empty stomach!<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4870\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Photo_3-1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4870\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Photo_3-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Do you know how is Hanukkah celebrated around the world? Click here to find out!\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/pxhere.com\/en\/photo\/395122\">Pxhere<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h2><b>Turkey<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkish Jews have a traditional song that they sing during Hanukkah called Ocho Candelas. Now, you might read that and think Ocho Candelas looks particularly Spanish, and you'd be right; the song is sung in the Ladino dialect that is used by Sephardic Jews, who fled oppression in Spain. <\/span><b>Turkish Jews also have their own spin on latkes that sounds distinctly Spanish called <\/b><b><i>burmelos<\/i><\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However you have, or are celebrating Hanukkah this year, we hope it is a wonderful time with friends and family. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
