Well, you wouldn't be wrong; almost 60 million people here speak English as both a first and second language! It's probably not even a stretch of the imagination to think you might hear a little Welsh. But what other languages are to be found on these beautiful isles that might be unexpected? Welsh is a beautiful-sounding language, famously loved by Tolkien enough to use as part of his basis for Elvish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Scottish languages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, <\/span><b>there is such a language as Scots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Germanic language that can be split into two separate dialects. In the Scottish Lowlands, Caithness, and the Northern Isles about <\/span><b>1.5 million people speak Scots<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the <\/span><b>Ulster dialect is spoken by 34,000<\/b> <b>people <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predominantly in Northern Ireland, though also in Berwick-On-Tweed as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scots is not to be confused with Scottish Gaelic! This is a <\/span><b>Goidelic Celtic language spoken by almost 66,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mostly in the Scottish Highlands and the Hebrides. Though Scottish Gaelic communities are also established in numerous Scottish cities as well as London.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Learning a new language? Check out our <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/level-tests\"><b>free placement test<\/b><\/a><b> to see how your level measures up!<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Gaelic<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as Irish, this is yet another Celtic Brythonic language of the UK; we do like our Celts! <\/span><b>Gaelic is spoken by 95,000 people<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in total throughout the British Isles, 74,000 of which you will find in the Republic of Ireland itself rather than the UK; if we are going to be specific, the Republic of Ireland is part of the British Isles, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the UK. <\/span><b>Irish-speaking communities in the Republic of Ireland are called Gaeltachts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are mostly found along the western coast. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of our Gaelic speakers are scattered throughout some parts of Northern Ireland as well as Glasgow and some of the major cities of England including London, Manchester, and Liverpool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Shelta<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelta is a Germanic language spoken by our Irish traveller community, totalling <\/span><b>around 90,000 speakers worldwide<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including 36,000 throughout the UK. It has other, less kind names like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bog Latin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or far fancier ones such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caint\u00edotar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelta has been documented as a language since the 1870s, though there is some in print that suggests it has been with us since as far back as 1700. Shelta is almost an unofficial creole language formed from Gaelic, Hiberno-English (English spoken throughout the island of Ireland), and Scots. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Angloromani<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This language is essentially an anglicised version of Romani. Some linguists argue that Angloromani is not a language all of its own but rather an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evocative vocabulary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><b>there are around 90,000 speakers throughout the UK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that might disagree with that! <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>This Indo-Iranian based language is thought to date back to at least the sixteenth century<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when it was a dialect of the northern branch of Romani, sharing much in common with Welsh Romani.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4905\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo_2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4905\" class=\"wp-image-4905\" src=\"https:\/\/www.listenandlearn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Photo_2.jpg\" alt=\"You thought that English was the only language spoken in the UK? Though don't mistake that small number for a language that is dying or unimportant; <\/span><b>take a trip to Cornwall<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you will see <\/span><b>major street signs in both English and Cornish<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as information at many tourist attractions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cornish is a revived language that had once become extinct.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cornish-speakers are fiercely defensive of their language and rightly so! It is a recognised language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, and is growing in popularity as a second language for those living in the area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Sign Languages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have <\/span><b>three different sign languages<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used throughout the UK, all with significant-enough differences to be confusing if you don't use the right one! I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. My focus when writing for Listen and Learn is on language and travel, but away from that, I like to write a lot about animals and the environment. Travelling while writing gives me a fresh perspective for all the things I write and allows me to consider everything from opposing points of view thanks to the people I meet along the way. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
