And that doesn't even take into consideration all the dialects and accents! So here we are, picking these accents apart one at a time trying to get to the more difficult parts of the language and help some English learners out. The capital of England, one of the most famous cities in the world with some of the most iconic landmarks? We know you know what London is! It is a multicultural city home to some 8.9 million, with the best connections to all the other places in the country by rail, bus, and even domestic flight. London, as the backdrop to so many movies, also exposes the world to one of the most distinctive accents you will find in the U.K. Cockney!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Learning English? You know how in every movie about the U.K., the people portrayed are either wealthy and speak The Queen's English, or not wealthy and speak far rougher? That would be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cockney<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Traditionally, those who can claim to speak Cockney must have been born within earshot of Bow Bells, which are the bells of St Mary-le-Bow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Stereotype<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cockney accent is the one with all the slang associated with being a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the whole <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apples and pears<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thing and just about everything else. The Cockney accent is about the wide-boys (and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0081912\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Del Boys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) on the streets of London who are wheeler-dealers and probably going to rip you off\u2014but will have a good heart about it as they do! Where do we start? Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Boyega, Hayley Atwell; so many of the U.K.'s most famous people were born in and around London. Though it isn't just movies and TV that will give you a range of famous Londoners. David Beckham, Naomi Campbell, Chris Martin; the list goes on and on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Hear it for yourself<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about hearing some Cockney accents from regular folk instead of just famous people? Youtube is the answer! This is an old, old accent! Cockney really does involve a lot of rhyming slang, so get used to that before you try to figure it out! In terms of language, the Cockney accent is non-rhotic; this means words ending in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">er<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sound the same. Words with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the middle like bath and path are pronounced broadly, and double <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is often missed out altogether. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sound typically becomes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often has a more <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">z<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-like sound. You will also find a lot of words sounding similar that don't sound similar elsewhere \u2014 think of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">war<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">saw<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as examples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>A little lingo<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, so that's enough of the background to Cockney. What about the accent itself? How do you use it? What is distinctive about the Cockney accent that you might not hear elsewhere in the U.K.? Well, maybe get yourself a little <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">booze<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (drink) to limber up your lips first! Those <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apples and pears<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we referred to earlier are simply the stairs; go up them, down them, do whatever you want! We aren't telling you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">porkies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (lies). Lying can get you into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barney Rubble<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (trouble), after all! We're just here to have a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bubble<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; as in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bubble bath<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 laugh; yes those two words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rhyme, in Cockney. Can you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adam and Eve<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it (you know\u2026 believe!)? I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals. Europe is an amazing place to travel. The countries vary so much, as do the languages, cuisines and ways of life. Though underneath all of that, travelling has really taught me that people are just people, and that we have more similarities than we do differences. We talk a lot at Listen and Learn about languages teaching us so much more than purely vocabulary and grammar, and it is true; there is nothing as exciting as getting to talk to someone you might not normally get to, just because you have made the effort to learn some of their language. Teaching English has given me further insight into the importance of understanding other languages and cultures. I've taught lessons on beaches about the climate crisis and the impact of oil spills on marine animals, and helped students in train stations to practise booking train tickets and make travel plans. I've worked with laboratory technicians in large conglomerates and newly qualified architects starting their own companies; people with completely different lives to mine. And it has been a privilege getting to know them all! Though the most rewarding thing about teaching is seeing students achieve their goals.
