Scholarship Guidelines
The “Listen & Learn Travel Scholarship” explained
The purpose of this scholarship is to offer undergraduate or graduate students the chance to learn a new language and explore Latin America, thus promoting foreign language learning and championing the benefits of immersive travel.
The winning applicant and the two runner ups will receive 10 hours of free online language courses for either Spanish or Portuguese.
After completing their free course, the winning candidate will then be invited to take their own, personalised trip, using the $3,000 USD budget we will provide, delivered via monthly payments of $1000 USD over 3 months. The trip must be taken outside of academic dates, i.e. during the university holidays.
Conditions of entry
Undergraduate students living in the UK with at least an elementary understanding of their desired language (Spanish or Portuguese). Candidates must be 18 or over at time of travelling.
Candidates are responsible for organising their own itinerary, accommodation, tickets, travel insurance, etc.
The $3,000 budget can be used for any aspect of travel, but no additional funds will be provided.
Is there a deadline for applications?
The scholarship has been rescheduled for 2022 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. New deadline to be announced.
The selection process
The top 3 candidates with the most votes will be shortlisted as finalists.
A panel of 2 Spanish and 2 Portuguese teachers will then judge each finalist’s profile, travel itinerary and tongue-twister video to select a winner.
When will the finalists be announced?
The winning applicant will be named on 2021 via our website and social media channels.
What is expected of the winner?
We want to share your experience with our language learners and future scholarship candidates. We want you to get creative and tell us what you’ve lived and learned. If you like social media, or writing, filming or taking great photos, share them!

The following is expected before the trip:
• Feedback about the 10 hours of free Spanish/Portuguese lessons
The following is expected during the trip:
• TWO blog posts per month of 800-1,000 words detailing travel experiences and fun facts regarding the destination being visited
• FOUR 1-minute videos per month detailing travel experiences and fun facts regarding the destination being visited
• AT LEAST TEN quality photographs of each new location or activity experienced
• TEN audio/video recordings of Spanish/Portuguese words, phrase or jokes learned during the trip
The following is expected after the trip:
• A summary report of AT LEAST 800 WORDS of the trip, including how the applicant’s language skills improved and details of the most inspirational and fulfilling experiences. The summary must be delivered to Listen & Learn no later than 30 days after the official end of the trip.
