Memrise French
Memrise

LEVEL:
beginner to intermediate

Memrise is a unique way to learn French. This app takes a different approach to helping you remember the language – by using humour and word associations. In addition, its content is user driven, meaning you can benefit from fellow French learners’ strategies for remembering vocabulary. While the website is still more complete than the apps, you can sign on to either with your account, allowing you to switch between interfaces. The advantage of crowd-sourcing the content is also this app’s downfall – there are a number of gaps, as users upload what they want, rather than focusing on creating a solid base of necessary words and phrases. So while it’s great for learning (and remembering) vocabulary, it’s not particularly helpful when it comes to your ability to hold a conversation and understand the grammar. Memrise is a fun way to start your journey to learning French, but you will have to find a more complete app later on when you’re at a more advanced level.
