How to Learn Spanish without Even Trying (part II)

Look About You

I learned a lot of words from looking at signs. Admittedly the translations of “Give Way” and “Closed for Lunch” haven’t really come in all that handy yet but I picked up a few more useful words as well. Just remember if you come to South America to learn Spanish that shop and restaurant signs often have spelling mistakes. I spent months fruitlessly asking for almondigas when I wanted meatballs and only recently discovered that there is no y in hielo. When I see a word written down I seem to remember it better though.

Don’t Miss an Opportunity

A big part of my whole experience in coming here to learn Spanish and travel has been about stumbling into situations. I wasn’t even meant to go to Bolivia and then I ended up there for a year despite twice having tickets in my hand which would have seen me leave. I think that if you take a big decision to go and do something exciting you need to go the whole way and accept that you are changing your life. This means that you have the freedom to make things up as you go along. As you do this you will probably find that you learn the language and quite a few other things along the way without even really giving it a second thought.
