It’s Hip to be Square in Spanish (Part II)

Small and Not so Beautiful

Diminutives are great, and as a Scot I am used to slipping “wee” into most sentences anyway. The problem is that when you take spanish lessons you will see that it is easy to abuse this type of word and reduce the size of everything. Maybe a native speaker could correct me on this but I think my descriptions of everything from food to the weather as being “wee” might just make me appear a trifle less than hip in the eyes of others.

Hold on a Sec

The other problem which kind of knocked the wind out of my sails was trying to work out how to hold fluent conversations while fishing my dictionary out of my pocket every couple of seconds. A couple of times I thought of something really smart to say (no, honestly. I did) but by the time I had thumbed through the dictionary and worked out how to say the say the blooming word any momentum had completely gone. The only advice I can give in this respect is to take spanish classes first and then attempt to be cool later on.
