South American Pop Culture Leaves Me Baffled (I)

One of the great things about learning a new language is the chance it gives you to enjoy films, television programs and pop culture which you would otherwise not get the chance to access. However, this can bring with it some problems, as I soon found out.
When I first decided to stay in Bolivia to learn Spanish and chill out for a spell I was kept busy buying things to take home for me and for family and friends. I noticed that a lot of the locals walked around wearing rather nice red t-shirts a CH symbol in the centre of it inside a heart. Another tourist told me that it seemed to be some sort of local designer brand so I bought quite a few of them. Later I showed them to my Bolivian friends and wondered why they all started falling about laughing. One of them turned on the TV a few days afterwards – I hadn’t watched anything on it until then – and showed me the Chapulin Colorado character. This is a kid’s series involving a hapless, overweight superhero who made the very same t-shirt famous. Never mind, I gave them away as presents back home and said they were Bolivian designer t-shirts anyway.
