English Lessons in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is diverse and inclusive, so it comes as no surprise that according to a study made by the National Records of Scotland, it has the highest proportion of immigrants in the country. If you happen to be one of them, you’re probably aware of all the advantages of living in this beautiful city, like its large job market, its amazing cultural life and its friendly residents. However, as you probably know, the only way to truly take advantage of these benefits is to learn how to communicate in English fluently. If you are still struggling to make yourself understood and feel as if things are not going as planned in the city, why don’t you start a language course? By doing this, you’ll be able to connect with fellow Aberdonians, have a more successful career and enjoy the varied cultural events that take place here. Furthermore, learning the local language will ensure you adapt to the local culture, which is essential if you’re planning on staying here for a long time and want to feel at home in the city.

Why Study English in Aberdeen?

Learn English for Work and Travel

If you came to the city in search of a better life, and want to access some of the well-paid job openings in Aberdeen’s successful oil and gas industry, or other large sectors like tourism, food and drink manufacturing or life sciences, you need to be able to communicate well in English. This is because, although the Aberdeen Region has historically had higher employment rates than the rest of the country, most of the jobs in the city require you to be a proficient English speaker. This means that unless you take the time to work on your language skills, you’ll only be eligible for most of the low-paid jobs that the rest of the locals don’t want to do. However, if you start your journey to fluency, your life in the city will change drastically, as you’ll be able to access amazing corporate positions in companies like Succulento, Aker Solutions and Ithaca Energy and take your career to the next level.

What’s more, because a large sector of the population is ageing, local employers are always looking for qualified workers in the foreign-born community who can fill the many free positions available in Aberdeen, so if you choose to study English, you’ll be able to apply incredible job opportunities in the area that can give you the life you’ve always dreamed of.

Learn English for Social

Learning English will allow you to participate in the city’s lively cultural life and truly understand the local culture and heritage. One of the most well-known celebrations that you simply can’t miss is the Aberdeen Highland Games. It’s held in July every year at Jefferson Park on the banks of the Hunter River, and it offers the perfect chance to attend an authentic Scottish Ceilidh, listen to the unique sounds of bagpipes and drums, watch amazing performances by local dancers and enjoy the amazing Scottish games. Although you don’t really need to be an advanced speaker to have fun during the games, speaking the language will allow you to explore the fascinating history behind them, and discover what they mean to the locals. On top of that, you’ll also be able to interact with others more confidently during the festival and find out everything you want to know about this entertaining celebration, so if you want to immerse yourself in Scottish culture, don’t forget to attend next July!

Learn English for Culture

If you’re new to the city and want to meet new friends with whom to socialise, you’ll find that there are wonderful social groups in Aberdeen that constantly organise fun activities you can attend to. One of them is Aberdeen out and about, which runs walks around the city, picnics, game nights and fun meetups at local cafes where you can meet new friends and put your English skills to the test. Although these meetings are completely free, you do need to register before attending, so don’t forget to check their event calendar on their virtual group to see what fun activities you can do this month!

Another great group you should check out, especially if you’re a foodie and want to meet others who share your passion for food, is Aberdeen Food & Drink Lovers. They meet at different local restaurants to try dishes, have some drinks, engage in fun conversations and relax, so it’s a great option to practise your English while you delight in the wonderful local cuisine and bond with the locals. They meet every Sunday at a restaurant or a local pub, so if you’re interested, don’t forget to take a look at its virtual group to get all the information you need.

Where to learn English in and around Aberdeen?

A great way to learn English for free in the city is to attend the Language Café, held by the Grampian Regional Equality Council, a charity that works to tackle prejudice and discrimination in Aberdeen by organising many courses and activities around the city that help immigrants integrate into the local society. The Language Café offers free conversational practice where you can chat with other English learners and meet some of the volunteers that will help you expand your vocabulary and boost your speaking skills. Meetings take place at Cafe Credo, located at 14 John Street, and are open to anyone, regardless of your skill level or age. However, as valuable as these activities are, the best way to become a proficient English speaker is to get the help of a trained professional who knows how to teach the language efficiently. Fortunately, at Listen & Learn, you’ll find just that, as we have some of the best tutors in the area who use the best training methods and materials that will turn you into a fluent speaker in no time.
