English Lessons in Manchester

Whether you came to Manchester for its universities, its lively cultural scene or its job opportunities, if you want to feel like a true Mancunian, you need to become a proficient English speaker. This is key for you to communicate clearly with the rest of the city residents, who come from all parts of the world and speak all sorts of languages, have a much more active social life and improve all your professional relationships in Manchester. What’s more, being fluent in the language is a requirement for most well-paid job positions, so if you want to make it here and have a successful career, the first thing you need to do is work on your language skills until you feel as comfortable speaking English as you feel when you speak your native language.

Although fluency won’t happen overnight, the process doesn’t need to be tedious. In fact, there are many ways of immersing yourself in the language that are actually enjoyable and entertaining, like attending local events, joining language groups and starting a language course at some of the amazing institutions around the city. However, if you still need some motivation to start your journey to fluency, take a look at all the ways your life would improve if you become an accomplished English speaker.

Why Study English in Manchester?

Learn English for Work and Travel

If you happen to have moved to the city to take advantage of its large job market, the most important skill you need to master is English. This will allow you to apply for better-paid positions in some of Manchester’s top industry sectors, which include financial services, tourism, advanced manufacturing and biotechnology. It’s also a smart move if you want to become eligible for a corporate position in the city and access some of the many job openings for foreign-born individuals who can communicate in more than one language. Some of these include Dutch-speaking Sales Representative for ABL Recruitment, Italian-speaking Customer Operations Analyst for Next Station and German-speaking Fast Track Engineer for Avanade, but there are many more available depending on which language you can speak in addition to English.

On the other hand, if you want to be your own boss and set up a business in the city, speaking English is essential to communicate with other business people in the area and deal with all sorts of clients and employees. Learning how to communicate clearly will also give you the confidence you need to sell whatever service you are interested in providing to the local community and successfully apply all the marketing techniques you need to expand in Manchester and become the best business person you can be.

Learn English for Social

Learning English will expand your awareness of the amazing cultural life in Manchester, as you’ll be able to understand and truly enjoy the wonderful events and activities that take place in the city. One of the most well-known events that you simply can’t miss is the annual Manchester International Festival, one of the leading celebrations of international art worldwide. Although you don’t need to be an advanced English speaker to understand art, if you develop your skills you’ll be able to attend the many talks given by some of the most well-known figures in the art world every year, take part in the workshops and join the various programmes of training activities and special events. What’s more, you’ll be able to read the fascinating stories behind every art piece you encounter, and truly get to know the international artists that come to the city and the message they want to convey in their works. If you want to attend the festival, which takes place in July, don’t forget to check this year’s programme and venues on its website, where you’ll find all the information you need to enjoy this experience to the fullest.

Learn English for Culture

One of the best ways to achieve the level of fluency you need to succeed in the city and make new friends at the same time is to attend the meetings organized by the Manchester English Language Lab. This group was made for people like you who can speak a little English but need some extra practice to boost their conversational skills. If you attend these free conversation sessions, in addition to making new friends in the city who are in a similar situation to you, you’ll improve your pronunciation, learn new words and be able to put your skills to the test with other learners. This meetup takes place at local bars like Oppidan Social Café, at 23 Edge Street, and the way they work is the organisers will prepare a topic for the whole group to talk about, as well as questions and ice-breakers to keep the conversation going. If this sounds like something you want to do, don’t miss out on these weekly meetings every Monday at 5 p.m.
